  • 1 Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet Now Matt. 26:2 before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that John 12:23; 17:1 His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He John 15:9 loved them to the end.
  • 2 And supper being ended, Luke 22:3 the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,
  • 3 Jesus, knowing Matt. 11:27; (John 5:20–23; 17:2); Acts 2:36;1 Cor. 15:27; (Heb. 2:8) that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He John 8:42; 16:28 had come from God and John 17:11; 20:17 was going to God,
  • 4 (Luke 22:27; Phil. 2:7, 8) rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.
  • 5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
  • 6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, Matt. 3:14 “Lord, are You washing my feet?”
  • 7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you John 12:16; 16:12 do not understand now, John 13:19 but you will know after this.”
  • 8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, (Ps. 51:2, 7; Ezek. 36:25; Acts 22:16;1 Cor. 6:11; Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5; Heb. 10:22) “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
  • 9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
  • 10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and (John 15:3; Eph. 5:26) you are clean, but not all of you.”
  • 11 For John 6:64; 18:4 He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”
  • 12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?
  • 13 Matt. 23:8, 10; Luke 6:46; (1 Cor. 8:6; 12:3); Eph. 6:9; (Phil. 2:11) You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.
  • 14 Luke 22:27 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, (Rom. 12:10; Gal. 6:1, 2;1 Pet. 5:5) you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
  • 15 For Matt. 11:29; Phil. 2:5; (1 Pet. 2:21–24); 1 John 2:6 I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
  • 16 Matt. 10:24; (Luke 6:40); John 15:20 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.
  • 17 Matt. 7:24; Luke 11:28; (James 1:25) If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
  • 18 Jesus Identifies His Betrayer “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the John 15:25; 17:12 Scripture may be fulfilled, Ps. 41:9; Matt. 26:23 ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’
  • 19 John 14:29; 16:4 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.
  • 20 Matt. 10:40; Mark 9:37; Luke 9:48; 10:16; Gal. 4:14 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”
  • 21 Matt. 26:21; Mark 14:18; Luke 22:21 When Jesus had said these things, John 12:27 He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Ps. 41:9; Matt. 26:46; Mark 14:42; Luke 22:48; John 6:64; 18:5; Acts 1:17;1 John 2:19 one of you will betray Me.”
  • 22 Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.
  • 23 Now John 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20 there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
  • 24 Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.
  • 25 Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, “Lord, who is it?”
  • 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it. ” And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Matt. 10:4; John 6:70, 71; 12:4; Acts 1:16 Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
  • 27 Luke 22:3 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
  • 28 But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him.
  • 29 For some thought, because John 12:6 Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, “Buy those things we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor.
  • 30 Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.
  • 31 The New Commandment So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, John 12:23; Acts 3:13 “Now the Son of Man is glorified, and (John 14:13; 17:4;1 Pet. 4:11) God is glorified in Him.
  • 32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and John 12:23 glorify Him immediately.
  • 33 Little children, I shall be with you a John 12:35; 14:19; 16:16–19 little while longer. You will seek Me; Mark 16:19; (John 7:34; 8:21); Acts 1:9 and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you.
  • 34 Lev. 19:18; Eph. 5:2;1 Thess. 4:9; James 2:8;1 Pet. 1:22;1 John 2:7 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
  • 35 1 John 2:5 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
  • 36 Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I John 13:33; 14:2; 16:5 am going you cannot follow Me now, but John 21:17;2 Pet. 1:14 you shall follow Me afterward.”
  • 37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will Matt. 26:33–35; Mark 14:29–31; Luke 22:33, 34 lay down my life for Your sake.”
  • 38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not Matt. 26:74; Mark 14:30; Luke 22:61; John 18:25–27 crow till you have denied Me three times.
