  • 1 The Anointing at Bethany Then, six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, Matt. 21:17; John 11:1, 43 where Lazarus was who had been dead, whom He had raised from the dead.
  • 2 Matt. 26:6; Mark 14:3; Luke 10:38–41 There they made Him a supper; and Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who sat at the table with Him.
  • 3 Then Luke 10:38, 39; John 11:2 Mary took a pound of very costly oil of Song 1:12 spikenard, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped His feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
  • 4 But one of His disciples, John 13:26 Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, who would betray Him, said,
  • 5 “Why was this fragrant oil not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?”
  • 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and John 13:29 had the money box; and he used to take what was put in it.
  • 7 But Jesus said, “Let her alone; she has kept this for the day of My burial.
  • 8 For Deut. 15:11; Matt. 26:11; Mark 14:7; John 17:11 the poor you have with you always, but Me you do not have always.”
  • 9 The Plot to Kill Lazarus Now a great many of the Jews knew that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might also see Lazarus, John 11:43, 44 whom He had raised from the dead.
  • 10 Luke 16:31 But the chief priests plotted to put Lazarus to death also,
  • 11 John 11:45; 12:18 because on account of him many of the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
  • 12 The Triumphal Entry Matt. 21:4–9; Mark 11:7–10; Luke 19:35–38 The next day a great multitude that had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
  • 13 took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out: “Hosanna! Ps. 118:25, 26 ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord !’ The King of Israel!”
  • 14 Matt. 21:7 Then Jesus, when He had found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
  • 15 “Fear Is. 40:9; Zech. 9:9 not, daughter of Zion; Behold, your King is coming, Sitting on a donkey’s colt.”
  • 16 Luke 18:34 His disciples did not understand these things at first; John 7:39; 12:23 but when Jesus was glorified, (John 14:26) then they remembered that these things were written about Him and that they had done these things to Him.
  • 17 Therefore the people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb and raised him from the dead, bore witness.
  • 18 John 12:11 For this reason the people also met Him, because they heard that He had done this sign.
  • 19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, John 11:47, 48 “You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him!”
  • 20 The Fruitful Grain of Wheat Now there Mark 7:26; Acts 17:4 were certain Greeks among those 1 Kin. 8:41, 42; Acts 8:27 who came up to worship at the feast.
  • 21 Then they came to Philip, John 1:43, 44; 14:8–11 who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”
  • 22 Philip came and told Andrew, and in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
  • 23 But Jesus answered them, saying, Matt. 26:18, 45; John 13:32; Acts 3:13 “The hour has come that the Son of Man should be glorified.
  • 24 Most assuredly, I say to you, (Rom. 14:9); 1 Cor. 15:36 unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain.
  • 25 Matt. 10:39; Mark 8:35; Luke 9:24 He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.
  • 26 If anyone serves Me, let him (Matt. 16:24) follow Me; and John 14:3; 17:24; (1 Thess. 4:17) where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
  • 27 Jesus Predicts His Death on the Cross (Matt. 26:38, 39); Mark 14:34; Luke 12:50; John 11:33 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? Luke 22:53; John 18:37 But for this purpose I came to this hour.
  • 28 Father, glorify Your name.” Matt. 3:17; 17:5; Mark 1:11; 9:7; Luke 3:22; 9:35 Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.”
  • 29 Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.”
  • 30 Jesus answered and said, John 11:42 “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake.
  • 31 Now is the judgment of this world; now Matt. 12:29; Luke 10:18; (Acts 26:18;2 Cor. 4:4) the ruler of this world will be cast out.
  • 32 And I, John 3:14; 8:28 if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw (Rom. 5:18; Heb. 2:9) all peoples to Myself.”
  • 33 John 18:32; 21:19 This He said, signifying by what death He would die.
  • 34 The people answered Him, Ps. 89:36, 37; Is. 9:6, 7; Mic. 4:7 “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; and how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’ ? Who is this Son of Man?”
  • 35 Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer (John 1:9; 7:33; 8:12) the light is with you. Jer. 13:16; (Gal. 6:10); Eph. 5:8 Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; John 11:10; (1 John 2:9–11) he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going.
  • 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become Luke 16:8; John 8:12 sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, and departed, and John 8:59 was hidden from them.
  • 37 Who Has Believed Our Report? But although He had done so many John 11:47 signs before them, they did not believe in Him,
  • 38 that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: Is. 53:1; Rom. 10:16 “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”
  • 39 Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again:
  • 40 “He Is. 6:9, 10 has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Matt. 13:14 Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.”
  • 41 Is. 6:1 These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.
  • 42 Walk in the Light Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but John 7:13; 9:22 because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;
  • 43 John 5:41, 44 for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.
  • 44 Then Jesus cried out and said, Mark 9:37 “He who believes in Me, (John 3:16, 18, 36; 11:25, 26) believes not in Me (John 5:24) but in Him who sent Me.
  • 45 And (John 14:9) he who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.
  • 46 John 1:4, 5; 8:12; 12:35, 36 I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.
  • 47 And if anyone hears My words and does not believe, John 5:45 I do not judge him; for John 3:17 I did not come to judge the world but to save the world.
  • 48 (Luke 10:16) He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him— Deut. 18:18, 19; (John 5:45; 8:47) the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.
  • 49 For John 8:38 I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, Deut. 18:18 what I should say and what I should speak.
  • 50 And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I John 5:19; 8:28 speak.”
