For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God, in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins,
being able to deal gently with the ignorant and misguided, since he himself also is 5:2Or subject to weakness beset with weakness;
and because of it, he is obligated, just as for the people, to also offersacrificesfor sins in the same way for himself.
And no one takes this honor to himself, butreceives itwhen he is called by God, even as Aaron was.
In this way also Christ did not glorify Himself to become a high priest, but He who said to Him,“You areMySon,TodayIhave begottenYou”;
just as He says also in anotherpassage,“You are a priest foreverAccording to the order ofMelchizedek.”
He, 5:7 During Christ’s earthly life in the days of His flesh, 5:7 Lit who having offered up offered up both prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the One able to save Him 5:7 Or out of from death, and He 5:7 Lit having been heard was heard because of His reverence.
Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.
And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
being designated by God as a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.
Concerning 5:11Lit whom, which him we have much to say, andit ishard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
For though 5:12 Lit because of the time by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the 5:12 Lit elementary principles of the beginning elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food.
For everyone who partakesonlyof milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant.
But solid food is for the 5:14Or perfect, cf.5:9 mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern both good and evil.
