Peter and John Arrested Now as they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the templeguardand the Sadducees came up to them,
being greatly agitated because they were teaching the people and proclaiming 4:2 Or in the case of in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
And they laid hands on them and put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening.
But many of those who had heard the 4:4Lit word message believed, and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
Now it happened that on the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem;
and Annas the high priestwas there, and Caiaphas and John and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent.
And when they had placed them in their midst, theybegan toinquire, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?”
Then Peter, 4:8Or having just been filled filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “ 4:8Lit Rulers of the people and elders Rulers and elders of the people,
if we are 4:9Or on trial being examined today for a good deeddoneto a sick man, 4:9Or by whom as to how this man has been 4:9Or made well savedfrom his sickness,
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that 4:10Or in by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead— 4:10Or in by 4:10Or Him thisnamethis man stands here before you in good health.
4:11Lit This One He is thestone which was rejectedby you,the builders,butwhich became the chief cornerstone.
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”Peter and John Threatened and Released
Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and comprehended that they were uneducated and ordinary men, they were marveling, andbegan torecognize them 4:13Lit that they had been as having been with Jesus.
And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.
But when they had ordered them to leave the 4:15 Or Council Sanhedrin, theybegan toconfer with one another,
saying, “What should we do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy 4:16Or attesting miracle sign has happened through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.
But lest it spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man in this name.”
And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all 4:18Or on the basis of in the name of Jesus.
But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to hear you rather than God, you be the judge;
for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
And when they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened;
for the man was more than forty years old on whom this sign of healing had occurred.
So when they were released, they went to their owncompanionsand reported all that the chief priests and the elders had said to them.
And when they heardthis, they lifted their voices to God with one accord and said, “O Master, it is You whomade the heaven and the earth and the sea,and all that is in them,
who by the Holy Spirit,throughthe mouth of our father David Your servant, said,‘Why did the 4:25Or nations Gentiles rage,And the peoples devise vain things?
‘The kings of the earth 4:26Or approached took their stand,And the rulers were gathered togetherAgainst theLord and againstHis 4:26Or Anointed One; Messiah, cf. Ps 2:2;Acts 4:27 Christ.’
For truly in this city there were gathered together against Your holy 4:27Or Son Servant Jesus, whom You anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the 4:27Or nations Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
to do whatever Your hand and Your purpose predestined to occur.
And 4:29Or as for the present situation now, Lord, take note of their threats, and grant that Your slaves may speak Your word with all confidence,
while You extend Your hand to heal, and 4:30Or attesting miracles signs and wonders happen through the name of Your holy 4:30Or Son Servant Jesus.”
And when they had prayed earnestly, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit andbegan tospeak the word of God with confidence.Distribution Among Needy Believers
And the 4:32 Or multitude congregation of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and not one was saying that any of his possessions was his own, but, for them, everything was common.
And with great power the apostles were bearing witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.
For there was not a needy person among them, for all who were owners of land or houses would sell them and bring the 4:34Lit the prices of the things being sold proceeds of the sales
and lay them at the apostles’ feet, and they would be distributed to each as any had need.
Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of 4:36Or Exhortation, Consolation Encouragement),
and who owned a field, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
